Virtualisation

Virtualisation is tricky to understand, but can be a powerful tool for your business. It lets you replace several physical servers with ‘virtual servers’ all running on a single piece of hardware.

What is virtualisation?

Imagine you have three physical servers in your business. That’s three different pieces of complicated hardware, all using power and needing regular maintenance.

You might use one as a central file store, one to run your customer database, and one to manage and distribute email coming into your business.

With virtualisation, just one server can perform all these tasks. Special software divides the single piece of hardware into three ‘virtual servers’, each of which functions as a server in its own right.

Using this technique, you can replace three, four, five or more servers with just one. Modern servers have more than enough power to perform several important jobs at once. Servers can cost thousands of pounds each, so cost savings are dramatic.

Why use virtualisation?

  • Reduce your costs. If you can replace five servers with one, you’ll save on electricity consumed, on upfront costs and on maintenance.
  • Add new functions quickly. You can set up virtual servers much more quickly than physical ones – in as little as half an hour.
  • Increase reliability. If you duplicate functions across virtual servers, you’ll be able to keep working even if one fails.
